Episode 21: The Price of Learning

I was honored by Jason Bradshaw from the Cephalopodcast, by mentioning me on his show's blog page. Jason does a really great podcast about science and marine biology. If you have a podcast I'd love to hear about it, so feel free to email at teachingforthefuture@gmail.com or send me an audio message through Odeo

Intro:

News:
  • Education Department expands tutoring and tutoring experiments from CNN.com The Bush administration will be bending the rules for No Child Left Behind and try to get even more poor children into tutoring.

Whether you agree or disagree with the approach of NCLB or the law itself, the more kids who get the help they need the better.

  • Finding Campaign Space on MySpace from Time.com Now you can find your local officials campaigning on MySpace. I think it is funny that a lot of their kids are operating these sights for them.

  • Text Book Rip Offs from InTheText.com
Textbook companies have a lot of tricks to raise the price of textbooks. This has been a
problem for years. I was the media intern for NJPIRG's Affordable Textbooks Campaign my senior year of college at Rutgers so I have very strong opinions on this issue. Check out Maketextbooksaffordable.com for more information and for PIRG's Bookswap which is like
    Craig's list
    for Textbooks.

  • Promo:
  • I am happy to announce that PodCamp has found a solid location. Podcamp is a BarCamp like confrence for podcasters and podcast listeners. It's being hosted by Bunker Hill Community College (sponsored by the Museum of Science, Boston)

  • Commentary:
Also on the topic of affordable books is Dan Gilmor'sWe the Media which is the only book I'm reading right now outside of school. It's an excellent guide to Read/Write culture and the history of New Media. This book sells for $24 on Amazon.com, but Gilmor released his book under a Creative Commons Liscense. This means that you can go to his publisher's page and down load the book for free.

    Episode 19: Economics Comics

I had another busy weekend of class at Lesley University, but I was still able to put out another show. I was listening to the fourth episode of the Lifehack.org Podcast where host Chris Brogan interviews Asha Dornfest from Parenthacks.com. She gives some good advice about marketing within your own home. Next I talk about a great podcast called Guy in a Tie by Jeff Bradley who teaches science in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Check out his website and the other podcasts he does with this students on his site or on iTunes. Recently the Financial Aid Podcast celebrated it’s 300th show and Lauren and I did a promo for Chris Penn and he played it on the top of the show. I end the show talking about free comic books from the Federal Reserve bank which are a great introduction to US Economic Policy..

Episode 18: Kids are not tiny adults...

I started another weekend class at Lesley University this weekend and I am already a bit burned out, but I didn't want to neglect my podcasting duties. In this episode I talk about media literacy and I try to remind everyone that kids are not mini adults. I also wanted to congratulate Christopher Penn of the Financial Aid Podcast on his 300th Episode because his show is great and he has been a big supporter for Teaching for the Future. Later in the show I talk about a Perry Bible Fellowship cartoon I saw in the Weekly Dig and how it shows how our world is changing. To wrap up the show I play a promo from Shrink Rap Radio which is a great psychology/education podcast that I really love.

If you like the show and you want to support Teaching for the Future go over to PodcastAlley.com and vote for the show. The votes are reset every month so please keep on voting.
